Control of Nanoparticles by the DGCCRF
Since 2016, the DGCCRF has been monitoring the presence of nanoparticles in food and non-food products.
On January 16, 2018, the DGCCRF presented the results of the controls carried out on nanomaterials in foodstuffs and cosmetic products at the National Consumer Council.
In cosmetic products:
Of 40 samples analyzed, 35 revealed the presence of nanoparticles.
The DGCCRF has identified non-compliances in the labelling of certain cosmetic products analysed (presence of nanomaterials, Carbon Black and others, not labelled).
According to EC Regulation 1223/2009 on cosmetic products, Article 19 point 1) g): “Any ingredient present in the form of a nanomaterial must be clearly indicated in the list of ingredients. The ingredient name is followed by the word “nano” in square brackets.
In foodstuffs :
The presence of nanoparticles was detected in 29 of the 74 food products analysed.
Only one product mentioned, on its label, the presence of all identified nanomaterials.
According to EU Regulation 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers, Article 18 point 3: “All ingredients in the form of manufactured nanomaterials shall be clearly indicated in the list of ingredients. The ingredient names are followed by the word “nano” in square brackets.
The aim of this first series of checks is to ensure that professionals comply with labelling obligations under current EU regulations.
In the event of non-compliance, the DGCCRF will require the labels to be brought into conformity and may go as far as the commitment to penal sanctions.
