{"id":17054,"date":"2020-03-02T11:05:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T10:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=17054"},"modified":"2020-03-13T11:06:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T10:06:26","slug":"chromium-vi-in-groundwater-in-marseille","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/chromium-vi-in-groundwater-in-marseille\/","title":{"rendered":"Chromium VI in groundwater in Marseille"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"hover_box\"><div class=\"hover_box_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid visible_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Marseille.png\" alt=\"Chromium VI in groundwater in Marseille\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid hidden_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Puit.png\" alt=\"Chromium VI in groundwater in Marseille\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2013, workers carrying out work in the Soulat railway\ntunnel noticed the presence of coloured water infiltration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local sanitation service revealed the presence of chromium VI in the\ngroundwater of the Saint-Louis district in the 15th arrondissement of\nMarseille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of chromium is known for its carcinogenic and mutagenic\nproperties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the investigation carried out by the DREAL (Regional\nDirectorate for the Environment, Development and Housing), the source of the\npollution was identified. It was the leak from a tank in an aeronautics plant:\nProtec M\u00e9taux d&#8217;Arenc, which was condemned in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>127mg\/L of chromium had been quantified in the groundwater located 400\nmetres from the plant, the maximum authorised limit in waste water at the\noutlet of ICPE being set at 0.1mg\/L.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the alert issued by the prefect to the town hall for a\nrestriction on the use of well water, a municipal by-law was not published\nuntil March 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Groundwater is not consumed but can be used to fill swimming pools or\nfor watering plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 9,000 inhabitants concerned by this pollution were only informed in\nNovember 2019, 6 years after its discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the corrective measures implemented in 2014 by the plant to\ncontain the pollution, the chromium content in 2017 remained 500 times higher\nthan the authorized level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A written request was sent to the Minister of Health to order an\nepidemiological and toxicological investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that Phytocontrol has national approval from the\nMinistry of Health to carry out sampling and analysis for water health control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will find the details of our accreditations on our technical annex\nCOFRAC N\u00b01-6066.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For any information, do not hesitate to contact us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In September 2013, workers carrying out work in the Soulat railway tunnel noticed the presence of coloured water infiltration.
