{"id":17548,"date":"2020-05-11T10:47:09","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T08:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=17548"},"modified":"2020-05-11T10:47:10","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T08:47:10","slug":"microplastics-in-the-mediterranean-seabed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/microplastics-in-the-mediterranean-seabed\/","title":{"rendered":"Microplastics in the Mediterranean seabed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"hover_box\"><div class=\"hover_box_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid visible_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Mer.png\" alt=\"Microplastics in the Mediterranean seabed\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid hidden_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Poissons-dans-leau.png\" alt=\"Microplastics in the Mediterranean seabed\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent study published on 30 April 2020 in the Journal\nScience reports areas of accumulation of microplastics in the Mediterranean\nseabed at levels never before measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, quantities of up to 1.9 million units over an area\nof one square metre have been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study was conducted jointly by the University of\nManchester, the National Oceanography Center, the University of Bremen, the\nUniversity of Durham and IFREMER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microplastic pollution in rivers is known, but the\nmechanisms relating to their dispersion and concentration on the seabed are\nstill poorly understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study has shown how deep-sea currents transport and\nconcentrate microplastics and carry them to the depths in accumulation zones\ncalled hotspots.
