{"id":17894,"date":"2020-05-25T17:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=17894"},"modified":"2020-06-10T17:30:28","modified_gmt":"2020-06-10T15:30:28","slug":"publication-of-regulation-eu-n2020-685-on-perchlorate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/publication-of-regulation-eu-n2020-685-on-perchlorate\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication of Regulation (EU) N\u00b02020\/685 on Perchlorate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"hover_box\"><div class=\"hover_box_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid visible_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/FruitsL\u00e9gumes.png\" alt=\"Publication of Regulation (EU) N\u00b02020\/685 on Perchlorate\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid hidden_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/actu_publication-rasff-2016_02.jpg\" alt=\"Publication of Regulation (EU) N\u00b02020\/685 on Perchlorate\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first\nEuropean Alerts (RASFF) on the presence of perchlorate in foodstuffs were\nissued in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a\nreminder, perchlorate is a substance naturally present in the environment, in\nnitrate and potassium deposits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also\na pollutant whose presence is due to the use of nitrate-based fertilizers as\nwell as ammonium perchlorate used in various industrial processes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also\nbe formed during the degradation of sodium hypochlorite used to disinfect water\nand can contaminate tap water. Water, soil and fertilizers are considered\npotential sources of perchlorate contamination of foodstuffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nSeptember 2014, EFSA published a scientific opinion on the health risks related\nto Perchlorate. The CONTAM Panel considered that exposure to this substance was\nof potential concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015,\n(EU) Recommendation 2015\/682 was published to collect additional data on the\npresence of perchlorate in food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, EFSA\nconducted a human exposure assessment for perchlorate, which identified a risk\nto human health via both chronic and short-term exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32020R0685&amp;from=FR\">Regulation (EU) N\u00b02020\/685<\/a> of 20 May 2020 amending Regulation (EC) N\u00b01881\/2006 has just been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This text\nsets maximum levels of perchlorate in certain foodstuffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be\napplicable as from July 1st, 2020. Foodstuffs that have been legally placed on\nthe market before 1 July 2020 may continue to be marketed until their date of\nminimum durability or use-by date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are\nthe matrices that will be regulated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fruit\nand Vegetables<\/li><li>Tea,\nHerbal and dried fruit infusions<\/li><li>Infant\nformulae, follow-on formulae and foods for special medical purposes for infants\nand formulae for young children<\/li><li>Baby\nfood<\/li><li>Processed\ncereal-based foods<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note\nthat our laboratory carries out the analysis of perchlorate under COFRAC\naccreditation (Scope N\u00b01-1904 available on the COFRAC website).
