If the products contain active substances whose\nlevels exceed the MRLs, they cannot be marketed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each analytical result, a measurement uncertainty is\ndetermined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measurement uncertainty is a parameter associated with\nthe result that characterizes the dispersion of the values that could\nreasonably be attributed to the measurand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, uncertainty is a confidence interval built\naround the result in which the &#8220;true&#8221; value has some probability of\nbeing contained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do authorities take measurement uncertainty into account in conformity assessment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European guide <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/sites\/food\/files\/plant\/docs\/pesticides_mrl_guidelines_wrkdoc_2019-12682.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SANTE\/12682\/2019<\/a> &#8220;Procedures for analytical quality control and method validation for the analysis of pesticide residues in food and feed&#8221; is a document for official control laboratories throughout the European Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guide specifies that the interpretation of results\nshould be carried out using uncertainty in order to verify the compliance of\nthe sample. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to cover inter-laboratory variability between\ndifferent laboratories, it is recommended that national regulatory authorities\nuse a default &#8220;increased&#8221; measurement uncertainty of 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To use this common uncertainty, each laboratory should\ndemonstrate that its own analytical method achieves a measurement uncertainty\nof less than 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In E15, the guide states that the result should be reported\nas follows: <br>\nResult = x \u00b1 U (units), where x is the measured value and U is the measurement\nuncertainty. <br>\nIn the context of official food controls by regulatory authorities, compliance\nwith the MRL should be verified as follows : <br>\nThe sample is considered non-compliant if x-U&gt; MRL. <br>\nAs an example : <br>\nIf MRL = 1mg\/kg<br>\nResult x = 2.2mg\/kg and U = 50%, then (x-U) = (2.2- 1.1) = 1.1 &gt; MRL or\nNON-conforming sample. <br>\nIf MRL = 0.5mg\/kg <br>\nResult x = 0.8mg\/kg and U = 50% then (x-U) = (0.8 &#8211; 0.4) = 0.4 &lt; MRL i.e.\nCONFORM Sample <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, &#8220;downward&#8221; uncertainty should be taken\ninto account when concluding on the compliance of a sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Need technical, regulatory and pricing information?
