{"id":27913,"date":"2022-08-23T10:31:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T08:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=27913"},"modified":"2022-09-27T10:32:32","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T08:32:32","slug":"regulation-n2022-1396-ethylene-oxide-limits-for-food-additives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/regulation-n2022-1396-ethylene-oxide-limits-for-food-additives\/","title":{"rendered":"Regulation N\u00b02022\/1396: Ethylene oxide limits for food additives"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"hover_box\"><div class=\"hover_box_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid visible_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gomme-de-guar.png\" alt=\"Regulation N\u00b02022\/1396: Ethylene oxide limits for food additives\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid hidden_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/actu_publication-rasff-2016_02.jpg\" alt=\"Regulation N\u00b02022\/1396: Ethylene oxide limits for food additives\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the numerous food scares concerning the detection of Ethylene Oxide over the last two years and its detection in food additives, Regulation (EU) N\u00b0 2022\/1396 has just been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It amends the Annex of Regulation (EU) No 231\/2012 laying down specifications for food additives listed in Regulation (EC) No 1333\/2008, as regards the presence of ethylene oxide in food additives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a reminder, ethylene oxide is classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic for reproduction under Regulation (EC) No 1272\/2008. It is neither approved as a biocidal product nor as an active substance for use in plant protection products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to ensure consumer safety, it is appropriate to ensure the prohibition of ethylene oxide, irrespective of its origin, in all food additives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum level applicable has been set at the limit of quantification in these products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Annex to Regulation (EU) No 231\/2012 is amended as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ethylene oxide may not be used for sterilisation in food additives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No ethylene oxide residue (sum of ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol, expressed as ethylene oxide (*)) greater than 0,1 mg\/kg, whatever its origin, may be present in food additives listed in Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No 1333\/2008, including mixtures of food additives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(*) Namely ethylene oxide + 0.55* 2-chloro-ethanol.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Phytocontrol laboratory offers you the analysis of ethylene oxide and its metabolite 2-Chloroethanol, by GC-MS\/MS, under COFRAC accreditation.
