{"id":9047,"date":"2019-06-11T11:07:41","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T09:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/?p=9047"},"modified":"2019-06-11T11:07:41","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T09:07:41","slug":"update-of-the-anses-the-provisional-management-threshold-for-datura-alkaloids-in-buckwheat-flour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/en\/regulatory-watch\/update-of-the-anses-the-provisional-management-threshold-for-datura-alkaloids-in-buckwheat-flour\/","title":{"rendered":"Update of the ANSES, the provisional management threshold for datura alkaloids in buckwheat flour."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"hover_box\"><div class=\"hover_box_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid visible_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Farine-de-sarrasin.png\" alt=\"Update of the ANSES, the provisional management threshold for datura alkaloids in buckwheat flour.\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scale-with-grid hidden_photo\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/drapeau_france.jpg\" alt=\"Update of the ANSES, the provisional management threshold for datura alkaloids in buckwheat flour.\" width=\"\" height=\"\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Datura alkaloids<\/strong> are regulated in the <strong>EU<\/strong> in Regulation (EU) No 2016\/239 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881\/2006 only for cereal-based foods and foods for infants and young children containing millet, sorghum, buckwheat or products derived therefrom up to <strong>1 \u00b5g\/kg atropine and 1 \u00b5g\/kg scopolamine.<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phytocontrol.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tropane-alkaoids-stakeholder-consultation0-ANNEXE-PROJET.pdf\">A draft regulation<\/a> is currently being drafted and the proposed amendments relate to the addition of limits on the following raw materials: millet, sorghum, buckwheat and their milling products and maize milling products, maize grains, infusions in solid or liquid form.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anses.fr\/fr\/system\/files\/RCCP2008sa0221.pdf\">Anses published a notice<\/a> defining an intervention threshold of <strong>100 \u00b5g total alkaloids<\/strong> (sum of atropine and scopolamine) per kilogram of <strong>buckwheat flour.<\/p>\n<p><\/strong>Since the publication of this notice, knowledge of the acute toxicity of these contaminants has evolved.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2013.3386\">2013 opinion<\/a>, EFSA adopted an acute reference dose <strong>(ARfD) of 0.016 \u00b5g\/kg body weight.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThe ANSES was contacted on February 8, 2019 by the DGCCRF for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anses.fr\/fr\/system\/files\/ERCA2019SA0022.pdf\">scientific and technical support<\/a> to update its opinion of February 18, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The Agency&#8217;s conclusions reveal that the intervention threshold of 100 \u00b5g\/kg buckwheat flour is not sufficiently protective to ensure a lower exposure of consumers of buckwheat flour to ARfD, therefore it should be considered obsolete.
