In 2024, the European Commission published Regulation (EU) 2024/1987 amending Regulation (EU) 2023/915 as regards the maximum levels of nickel in certain foodstuffs.
Maximum levels have been set for the following categories:
- Nuts
- Vegetables
- Seaweed
- Oilseeds
- Cereals
- Cocoa and chocolate products
- Infant food
- Fruit juices
The maximum levels for nuts, vegetables, seaweed, oilseeds, cocoa and chocolate products, infant food and fruit juices have been in force since 1 July 2025.
On 1 July 2026, the following limits for cereals will come into force:
- 1.5 mg/kg for durum wheat and rice (excluding husked rice)
- 2 mg/kg for husked rice
- 3 mg/kg for pseudo-cereals and millet
- 5 mg/kg for oats
- 0.80 mg/kg for other cereals
Please note that your Phytocontrol laboratory can assist you with testing for nickel and other metals in foodstuffs under COFRAC accreditation.
