Suspension of Metam use in FranceSuspension of Metam use in France
In October, many cases of poisoning were reported in Maine et Loire following the spreading of metam. The Prefecture of Maine et Loire issued a press release on 12 October 2018 suspending the use of any phytosanitary product containing Metam in Maine et Loire until 26 October 2018. You will find attached the press release from the prefecture. Among the reasons mentioned, these intoxications are due to a failure to comply with the technical conditions for applying the product but also to the current climatic conditions, which make the soil too dry and too hot for a safe application of this substance. The suspension of use has just been extended to the whole French territory following the publication of the attached decree of 25 October 2018. The use of plant protection products containing the active substance “metam” or “metam-sodium” is therefore suspended until 31 January 2019. Metam is an EU authorised substance, five commercial solutions containing this active ingredient are currently authorised in France for soil treatment.
